  Windsor Regional Hospital
One of the Largest Non-Teaching Hospitals in Ontario Windsor Regional Hospital is a centre of excellence, where new nurses can count on strong support. Windsor Regional Hospital is a multi-site community hospital and health-care complex serving more than 350,000 people within the City of Windsor and Essex County. The Metropolitan Campus is a centre for acute medical care, and includes such services as Emergency, Medicine, Surgery, Cancer Treatment, Day Surgery, Cardiac Care, Intensive Care and Women's and Children's Programs. Patients are cared for on an outpatient and in-patient basis. The Women's & Children's Program provides comprehensive obstetric and newborn care to women and their infants throughout Windsor and Essex County. The number of babies delivered exceeds 4,000 each year, and we continue to see population growth in our area. The Program provides high-risk obstetrical services as well as neonatal care at our modified Level III Neo- Natal Intensive Care Unit. Gynecological care is also provided to women of all ages, and the model of care is in transition to a single-room maternity care model. Within 18 months, Paediatric Services, currently located off-site, will also be housed at the Metropolitan Site. A short distance away, the Western campus has a reputation as a centre of excellence in Geriatric Assessment, Long-Term and Complex Continuing Care, Rehabilitation and Mental Health Services. Also located on this campus is Malden Park Continuing Care Centre, a state-of-the-art facility, with 225 long-term care beds. The Motto at Windsor Regional Hospital is "Our Family Caring For Your Family" "We try to place staff where their first love is. If you want to be a labour and delivery nurse, we'll make every attempt to place you there," says the Nursing Human Resources Advisor. After a two or three-day general hospital orientation, each new nurse is given a unit-specific orientation, which varies in length according to the nurse's experience and the complexity of the job. Nurses on the medical unit may need an additional three-week orientation, while labour and delivery nurses may require 12 weeks. Nursing Experience is Enhanced Clinical Practice Managers provide both orientation and continuous learning. They ensure a nurse's skills are up to date and provide any necessary training related to new procedures and new equipment. The Learning and Education Department offers further education courses and facilitates outside study. There are team meetings and team rounds every week. Some courses are offered on site in conjunction with the University of Windsor or local community colleges. Further education is both encouraged and supported. A tuition reimbursement program covers 75 per cent of fees for full-time employees. A new partnership has been developed with the Universities of Windsor and Western Ontario called the Southwestern Ontario Medical Network (SWOMEN), in which medical residents, interns and allied health professionals train at Windsor Regional and provide another level of expertise. Windsor Regional Hospital Has a Special Relationship with the Community it Serves An excellent health sciences library adjacent to the main entrance at the metropolitan site is available for research. Both sites have active Auxiliaries, and the local hospital Foundation has recently completed a very successful and ambitious fund-raising campaign. The five-year project, entitled Together in Caring Campaign, raised $40 million. With government- matched dollars, this money will pay for a 74,000-square-foot expansion and extensive renovations to continue the high level of care that is our tradition.
