Vancouver Island Health Authority (VIHA) is one of the 6 primary public-health employers in BC and provides hospital, community, home care, environmental and public health services including education and prevention services to the 752,000 residents of Vancouver Island.

Where is Vancouver Island?

Vancouver Island is the largest island off the Pacific Coast of North America and the tenth largest island in Canada. It is 69 km from Vancouver, BC and 247 km from Seattle, WA. (2 ½ hours by ferry or 119 km by air)
Condé Nast Traveler magazine readers have voted Vancouver Island the #1 island in North America for eight consecutive years, and Travel & Leisure magazine readers voted Vancouver Island as one of the 10 Top Islands in the World in 2009.

Living and Working on Vancouver Island

Moving to Vancouver Island means being able to choose from a wide range of urban, rural or remote communities. Whatever the lifestyle you are looking for, we have it here. Our cities are brimming with cultural events, festivals, shopping and restaurants as well as friendly towns with vibrant neighbourhoods…and all this in a place where we enjoy breathtaking mountains, the sparkling Pacific Ocean and Canada’s mildest year-round climate.

Why VIHA as an Employer?

You will enjoy an excellent work environment as well as a comprehensive package of employer-paid benefits, including coverage for part-time and casual employees.

New and Expanding Facilities

Nanaimo Regional General Hospital is slated for a new $46.3 million Emergency Department. It will double the size and increase the treatment rooms 24 to 41.

Construction of the new 500-bed Patient Care Centre at the Royal Jubilee Hospital, Victoria, is continuing and will be ready for patients in 2011.
North Island Acute Care Services will be greatly enhanced with the announcement of two new hospitals coming - one located in Campbell River and another in the Comox Valley. Combined, the new hospitals will have approximately 240 beds - an increase of approximately 70 beds from the current bed base in the area.

We’re Doing Great Things

Victoria General Hospital’s Electrodiagnostics is on the cutting edge, putting into service the first Pico Compact Urodynamic System in North America this year. This new tool in the Urodynamics Lab gives VIHA patients access to the best diagnostic tools available.
VIHA is gaining international attention for our contributions to, and good work in:
•   Centre of Excellence for Breast imaging
•   Diabetes
•   Neurology
•   Burns
•   Family-centered maternity and infant care and pediatrics
•   Stroke care
•   One of the top heart programs in North America
•   Respiratory rehabilitation
•   Mental health and geriatric mental health (first in Canada to look at impact of aging and dementia).

New Nursing Graduates

New RN graduates joining VIHA receive extra support from some of our most experienced and skilled nurses through our New Grad Transition program. During the past 5 years, about 600 nurses have taken new grads under their wings, to give each new recruit the support they need to help them gain confidence, and integrate into the unit culture. Ninety-five percent of the new grads hired by VIHA since 2005 are still with the organization - a testament to the success of the New Grad Program.

 Working with the Community

In a partnership with government and community groups, VIHA is involved in BC’s first multi-agency outreach team to work with the homeless. This Downtown Outreach Team in Victoria helps connect homeless people suffering from mental illness or addictions issues with services including stable housing, addictions services and vocational support.

We’re proud of our unique and progressive working environment that is partnered with an enviable lifestyle which features spectacular seascapes, breathtaking mountains and Canada’s mildest year-round climate.
VIHA brings together the best people as we look for new ideas and improved practices.
Vancouver Island is truly a piece of paradise – consider a move today!
