  St. Peters Hospital

Since 1890, St. Peter’s has been leading the way in caring for adults with chronic illness. Initially opened as a 14-bed home for people who required chronic care, St. Peter’s provided a level of care that was not available in other hospitals at the time. As our community has grown in size and complexity over the years, so, too, have the health-care needs of its members. Today, approximately 300 nurses at St. Peter’s Hospital and St. Peter’s Residence at Chedoke are delivering efficient and effective complex and long-term care services to our patients and residents.

A Comprehensive Approach to Care

Individuals come to St. Peter’s with chronic, complex medical issues and challenges. Our individualized and holistic approach to care ensures that the unique needs of every person are met.

St. Peter’s Hospital is a 250-bed complex care hospital providing inpatient and outpatient community-based programs and services. Five specialty programs are offered: Behavioural Health, Complex Continuing Care, Palliative Care, Rehabilitation and Community Services.

St. Peter’s Residence at Chedoke is a new 210-bed, long-term care residence that features high quality living in a home-like environment. Designed as a place to call home, there are seven terraces, each with access to a secure courtyard or balcony.

Opportunities to Learn and Grow

Up to two weeks of orientation for both RNs and RPNs, combining classroom and clinical experience, is provided for nurses hired at our organization. They receive competitive salaries, excellent benefits and tuition for continuing education. Through our affiliation with Mohawk College and McMaster University, we also provide nursing students with clinical experience.

St. Peter’s employs case managers, clinical nurse educators, clinical nurse specialists and nurse practitioners. Opportunities for professional advancement and growth are supported and ongoing education is promoted through workshops and seminars. Nurses can stay up to date through use of our Resource Centre, and are supported in pursuing specialty certification in areas such as hospice/palliative care and gerontology.

Quality improvement projects and research initiatives allow for professional development. Nurses interested in further developing their leadership and teaching skills can act as preceptors to students.

Nurses at St. Peter’s are valued members of a highly professional, compassionate team, and play an integral role in the decision-making process when it comes to delivering care. They have opportunities to voice their opinions through monthly Nursing Council meetings, as well as a number of organizational committees.

A Rewarding Place to Work and Live

As part of a friendly, tight-knit team, nurses have an opportunity to take advantage of our staff wellness program, which includes subsidized yoga, tai chi, Pilates, Weight Watchers and smoking cessation, as well as regular on-site and off-site events.

Living or working in Hamilton, a thriving and multicultural city, allows for a high quality of life. Pleasures and pastimes in this area range from historic landmarks to delectable cuisine to a network of hiking trails. In addition, Toronto and Niagara Falls are only an hour’s drive away.

Looking Ahead to a Bright Future

St. Peter’s is always working to grow and enhance our services and our team of professionals. We offer nurses the opportunity to build on their clinical assessment and care-planning skills in gerontological nursing, a specialty which features great potential for learning and skill development. It’s an exciting time to work at St. Peter’s, and we welcome all those with a passion for caring for adults with chronic illness, and who are seeking to practice in a professional, caring patient/resident-focused environment.
