Orillia Soldiers' Memorial Hospital (OSMH) plays an integral role in the health care system in North Simcoe Muskoka, offering a state-of-the-art acute care hospital that families across our region come to for care.

As a regional referral centre, we provide acute medical and surgical care as well as specialized services such as dialysis, obstetrics, paediatrics, mental health and complex continuing care to Orillia and surrounding areas, including Barrie, Collingwood, Parry Sound and Muskoka. Our catchment area is 150 km (north to south), covering an area of 9,200 square kilometres and serving a population of 453,000.

We also provide state-of-the-art diagnostic services and a full range of inpatient and outpatient programs.

A broad scope of practice

As Orillia Soldiers' Memorial Hospital's philosophy as a trusted provider and leader of community hospital and designated regional specialized services continues to create and expand the programs and services that we provide in order to meet the unique needs of the communities we serve, nurses have the opportunity to practice in a wide range of clinical areas. These areas include mental health, rehabilitation, complex continuing care, surgical services, paediatric and obstetric services, critical care, oncology, acute care and ambulatory care.

As well, OSMH is proud to be a regional centre for Kidney Care, Paediatric Medicine, Adult and Paediatric Diabetes, Children's Complex Care and the Senior Friendly Hospital Strategy.

At Orillia Soldiers' Memorial Hospital we have a commitment to lifelong learning and we offer our employees numerous professional development opportunities, including orientation sessions, workshops, seminars, mentoring opportunities (such as the New Graduate Guarantee Program) courses and training. Additionally, we have a Tuition Assistance Program supported by the OSMH Foundation.

We recognize that nurses are highly valuable and an integral part of the health care team, we have an active Nursing Professional Practice Council and Professional Practice Advisory Council for advancing practice issues organization-wide.

Leadership opportunities

Nurses at Orillia Soldiers' Memorial Hospital are offered many opportunities for leadership development. We support the promotion of front-line nurses to leadership roles such as charge/team leaders and care specialists. Other leadership roles include Nurse Practitioners, Program Managers and Program Directors.

Quality of work life

Orillia Soldiers' Memorial Hospital has an active Workplace Wellness Committee that works to meet the needs of our valued employees. The committee has representation from various occupations throughout the organization and is committed to maintaining a balanced workplace program that supports the mental, physical, emotional and spiritual wellbeing of all employees and ensuring a healthy workplace.

With a significant aboriginal and francophone population within our immediate catchment area, OSMH is keenly aware of the importance of cultural awareness among staff.  Led by our Director of Pastoral Care and Cultural Awareness, we have a strong corps of volunteers who help facilitate specialized spiritual care needs for all faiths.

OSMH also has an active Social Committee who is responsible for the success of events such as the staff appreciation BBQ, the Annual Staff Golf Tournament, and the Christmas Party. These events help to improve and maintain the culture and morale of OSMH.

Something for everyone
