North Bay and District Hospital

A hospital is often the heart of its community and certainly that is true of the North Bay and District Hospital (NBDH), which has served the families of North Bay and the surrounding district for over 100 years. Previously two separate hospitals, the 228-bed facility is a result of the merger of North Bay’s Civic Hospital and St. Joseph’s General Hospital.
A district referral centre, NBDH provides acute care services to North Bay and surrounding areas, including Mattawa, West Nipissing and Temiskaming community hospitals. Our catchment area is 500 km (north to south), covering an area of 30,717 square kilometres and serving a population of 129,000.

The North Bay Regional Health Centre

North Bay has been given the opportunity to create a unique and innovative health centre, tailored to meet the needs of citizens in our region. NBDH and the Northeast Mental Health Centre (NEMHC) are creating an exciting partnership by co-locating facilities side-by-side to form the North Bay Regional Health Centre (NBRHC).

The new Health Centre will be a one-stop location offering a state-of-the-art acute care hospital and a modern, recovery-focused mental health facility that serves northeast Ontario, all housed in one cooperative health care campus. It will be the place where families in our region come for care, regardless of whether they are facing physical or mental health challenges.
The NBRHC is on budget and on time to open its doors in fall 2010.
Nursing at NBDH

NBDH is focused on patient and staff safety. Our nurses work under a total patient care model, encouraging nurses to work at their full scope of practice. Nurse clinicians assist nurses on the units with new equipment and advancements in care.
We offer generous opportunities for education, and have many nurses who are very involved with nursing education. This includes being a preceptor for students or new staff, and teaching part-time at the university or college.
NBDH has students in nursing, medicine, respiratory therapy, pharmacy, paramedic program, and other allied health professions.
Our nurses have the ability to participate on quality, ethics and other committees influencing professional practice and patient care in the hospital.

Life in North Bay

North Bay is a caring, safe community of energetic, high-spirited people. The combination of lush forests, spring-fed water and clean air creates a healthy environment for working, living and raising a family.
Situated between Lake Nipissing and Trout Lake, the City offers lakefront property in both urban and rural settings. The short distance between home and work allows more time to enjoy the wealth of parkland and leisure facilities.
A variety of recreation opportunities exist in the community provided by the natural environment for walking, biking, or hiking, as well as, those programs and services offered by the municipality and other community recreation providers.
Multi-level educational opportunities, offer elementary and high school programs including English and French language curriculums.

Technical training and professional programs are served by a wide range of courses at Canadore College and Nipissing University.
