  Humber River Regional Hospital

As one of Canada’s largest regional acute care hospitals, Humber River Regional Hospital (HRRH) offers a full range of acute medical services to some 800,000 people in the northwest Greater Toronto Area (GTA). The hospital is a designated Regional Paediatric Centre, a member of the Child Health Network of the GTA, a Regional Dialysis Centre – with Canada’s first home nocturnal dialysis program – and home to Ontario’s first medical Centre of Excellence, for laparoscopic bariatric surgery.

CNA 2006-2007 Employer Recognition Award for Innovation!

In July 2007, The Canadian Nurses Association awarded Humber River its 2006-2007 Employer Recognition Award for Innovation – one of only three hospitals in Canada to receive this honour.

The CNA cited Humber River’s “innovative activities in support of certified nurses,” including financial support for certification in nursing specialties, and both in-hospital and external educational opportunities.

Marlene Smadu, CNA president, noted that Humber River is “committed to creating an exceptional working environment and that they promote a culture of professionalism and continuing competence that is imperative for excellence in patient care.”

Lifelong Learning a Priority

Humber River has outstanding orientation and ongoing staff education programs in place. This includes a three-week detailed orientation program for new nurses, a comprehensive tuition reimbursement policy for ongoing professional development and educational support at the clinical and personal levels. Nurses are encouraged to become preceptors to students and mentors to new staff. Mentoring workshops are provided to interested nurses with a special focus on the needs of new grads. Nurses interested in critical care nursing are provided with a recognized 12-week paid critical care program through a community college.

Nurses Have a Voice

Clinical nurses at HRRH, including front-line staff, contribute to decision-making and hospital-wide initiatives that support excellence in clinical practice. Staff participate through the Nursing Professional Council, the Interdisciplinary Professional Practice Council and various committees to develop new clinical practice guidelines.

Full-time Nursing Opportunities

With three sites, Humber River offers nurses a challenging, fast-paced work environment and the chance to stretch their skills and abilities in a wide variety of clinical areas. At 70 percent Humber River is right on target with the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care guidelines for full time nursing positions. This is welcome news for experienced professionals and new grads alike.

New Acute Care Hospital Approved

Humber River’s redevelopment plan, approved by the Ontario government, will see us move to a new, state-of-the-art acute care facility in 2012. The centerpiece of HRRH’s new Model ttechnology to support the provision of high-quality patient-centred care. Planning has already begun, and construction is expected to start in 2010.
