Help shape the future of healthcare in Waterloo Region, Wellington County and southwestern Ontario

Join the team of healthcare professionals at Grand River Hospital

Grand River Hospital (GRH) is one of Ontario’s largest community hospitals that provides excellent patient centered care to over 760,000 residents of Waterloo Region and Wellington County. Through innovation and collaboration, Grand River Hospital has become a leader in the provision of patient care programs for our community. This care includes a regional cancer program, renal program, childbirth and children’s services, mental health and addiction services, medical and surgical services, complex continuing care, laboratory medicine, pharmacy services, and diagnostics. Grand River Hospital’s programs and services are provided at the Freeport Site, the Kitchener-Waterloo Site and several satellite clinics throughout the region.

Opportunities For New Learners

At GRH, we strive to provide nursing students with a positive experience. Our experienced nursing staff at GRH helps the student nurse to grow and develop into a successful novice nurse. GRH offers clinical placements throughout various clinical settings including the ER department, ICU and Complex Continuing Care. Together, the GRH staff and the human resources department recruit many of these

student nurses and ensure each nurse finds their new ‘home’ at GRH.

Supportive Leadership

Nurses at GRH are offered many opportunities to be an active partner with the leadership team in the decision making process that ultimately impacts patient care. As an RNAO Best Practice Spotlight Organization, GRH has put in place 14 new best practice guidelines in nursing across the hospital. These guidelines bring the latest evidence in patient care into day-to-day nursing practice, helping improve outcomes, quality of care and comfort for patients and families. Staff Members are encouraged by the leadership team to sit on these various best practice guideline development groups.

Nurses are encouraged to participate in many other clinical committees such as Quality Council, Professional Practice and Nursing Council. Committees such as these give nurses the opportunity to act as change agents and foster transformational leadership and professionalism.

Leadership Opportunities

Frontline nurses at GRH are offered many leadership opportunities for leadership development, both formally and informally. GRH offers a robust leadership development program for all leaders within the organization which includes formal and informal instruction and education, networking and mentorship. GRH supports the promotion of frontline nurses to leadership roles such as resource nurses and education practice leads. Other leadership roles available include Clinical Nurse Specialists, Nurse Practitioners, Geriatric Emergency Nurses (GEM) and Clinical Managers.

Quality of Work Life

GRH believes the personal and professional development of hospital staff is an investment in our future. GRH offers an internal Learning Management System, Library and Tuition Assistance Program. Through wellness initiatives, GRH supports staff through smoking cessation programs and partnering with local fitness clubs to offer membership discounts. With an active Quality of Work Life committee, GRH provides staff appreciation BBQs, an annual Health Fair, individual employee and team Awards of Excellence and quarterly Town Hall meetings with our CEO. These events are just a few that allow us to live our corporate values of compassion, collaboration, positive attitude, professionalism and respect, each and every day.

The nurses at GRH are valued members of our team who, through their commitment and dedication help us achieve our mission for our patients: at Grand River Hospital, we work with the communities we serve towards life-long health and well-being for all. We exist to provide exceptional care through inspired people, one patient at a time.
